Known Issues
- Projects or Input Sets from ProVAL 2.x that are saved in a different region than your system can’t be opened by ProVAL 3.x. This is due to the different default number formats throughout the world.
- Creation of the MS Excel Report may fail with long file and/or profile names since Excel imposes a limit of 31 characters on sheet names.
- Installation requires elevated privileges on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
- While not directly related to the software, you may encounter issues downloading pv3 or pv3at files when using MS Internet Explorer.
3.03.0094: October 15, 2010
Editor
- Invalid values were allowed for the lead-in and lead-out.
- The type of the first section could not be changed.
Charts
- Saving the chart image to a file didn’t always work.
- Crash when attempting to save the chart image to a file before the project had been saved.
3.03.0091: August 16, 2010
Analysis – Smoothness Assurance
- The Grinding analysis for MRI and RN would fail if the Comparison Plot was set to Raw Profile.
3.03.0090: July 30, 2010
Analysis – Profilograph
- When more than one profile is selected, tables in the exported reports showed the same scallops for each profile.
- The scallops chart was not being drawn correctly when a lead-in is defined.
Installation
- Missing file may make ProVAL inoperable.
3.03.0087: June 25, 2010
Editor
- The units in the filtering section are always in USCS.
- Changing the lead-in or lead-out could cause the software to crash if a previously defined section is no longer ‘valid’.
- The History did not record what values were changed from, only what they were changed to.
Viewer
- Ampersands in file names were not being shown.
Ride Quality
- When analyzing profiles of different lengths and/or starting locations in the Fixed Interval analysis, the software may crash.
- Analyses that require left and right profiles (HRI, MRI, RN), now require all selections to have left and right profiles, not just at least one selection.
3.03.0084: June 11, 2010
Editor
- An unintended consequence of build 73 is that changes in the Basic screen cannot be applied until a project is saved.
- The Full section is no longer explicitly defined or visible in the Section view. Instead, the length of the Lead-In and Lead-Out are defined in the Basic screen. The profiles are now adjusted so that a distance of 0 corresponds to the first point after the Lead-In. If you have defined a negative offset to do this adjustment yourself, you should change the offset to 0.
File I/O
- Dates and times from KJ Law files were not being imported correctly.
- The sample interval in Ames files will now always be imported as in unit feet.
Misc
- Improvements to startup performance.
Report
- A majority of the numbers in the Excel report are now stored as numbers (i.e., you don’t have to convert from texts to numbers), though there are a few exceptions.
Viewer
- The Data Information table in the PDF report was duplicating the values for each profile, instead of displaying once for the file.
Analysis – Rolling Straightedge
- Distances were not displayed correctly when the Full section did not encompass the entire profile.
Analysis – Ride Quality
- Creation of the Excel Report would fail if more than one profile was selected.
- The Fixed Interval analysis was not giving a validation error if a Basis profile was not selected.
3.02.0078: March 18, 2010
Viewer
- Dragging profiles onto the chart does not work correctly in 3.02.
File I/O
- More fallout from the mils correction. Texas PRO files with two profiles had the wrong elevation unit.
Editor
- If the file selected in the Editor was then removed in the Viewer, the Editor screens still showed the selected file.
- After filtering, speed and temperature units of the new file were sometimes wrong.
- The chart in the Basic screen was still showing the lead-in and lead-out data.
3.02.0077: February 26, 2010
Misc
- Several performance enhancements.
File I/O
- The RSP problem previously fixed reappeared.

Viewer
- The lead-in and lead-out are no longer shown on the chart.
Analysis – Smoothness Assurance
- The chart sync feature did not work correctly in some circumstances. Please contact us if you still see issues after this fix.
3.02.0076: February 1, 2010
Installation
- The installation is now digitally signed, so you should not see a warning about the software coming from “Unknown Publisher”. If you do, then you should contact your IT staff to get the latest Root Certificates from Microsoft Update.

- The Mils unit for elevation was not being handled correctly.
Home
- Files can now be dragged to anywhere on the form, instead of the just the Recent and Unsaved Projects
- The ProVAL Online has been fully implemented to show current news and upcoming workshops instead of just loading the web site.
- Added a button to clear the Recent and Unsaved Projects.
Viewer
- Changes made in the Editor were not immediately reflected in the Viewer.

- Templates were not being applied or saved correctly if the Ride Quality grid was being edited.
- Grinding Strategies were not being applied or saved correctly if the grid was being edited.
- Sometimes multiple thresholds were drawn on the Continuous charts.
- Added the Butterworth Band-pass and High-pass filters to the Comparison filter.
- The profile selector was allowing multiple selections.
- The 250mm filter was not being applied for the fixed interval analysis.
3.01.0063: November 24, 2009
Installation
- The installation tries to install Microsoft .NET 2.0 SP1 if it is not installed, even though SP2 is installed.
- The background images did not look correct when using Large Fonts.
File I/O
- Text files such as ERD were being imported using the computer’s Regional Settings. This causes problems if the file was written using a different Regional Setting.
- PPF Files (and thus Projects) may not be openable if the computer’s Regional Settings were not set to the US.
Analysis – Ride Quality
- For the “MRI and IRI” ride quality index, the column headers were out of order. MRI was listed last and should have been first.
Analysis – Rolling Straightedge
- The layout of the results grid is wrong. Sometimes is not possible to see all the results.
Analysis – Smoothness Assurance
- The layout of the Histogram results grids is wrong. Sometimes is not possible to see all the results.
- Added legend for the Fixed Interval chart.
- HRI – The original profile was being used for the after grinding comparison.
- Editing grinding locations could cause the software to get ‘stuck’.
Misc
- Various cosmetic changes.
- Better remembering of the last directory used for file dialogs.
- Added the ability to copy most grids to the clipboard using the right mouse button or the context menu key. This feature will be fine-tuned in future builds.
3.00.0059: October 22, 2009

- The profile selector did not prevent selection of more than 2 profiles.
Analysis – Profile Certification
- Automatic assignment of Run Numbers has been improved. In particular, you can now enter numbers in the order you want, including skipping numbers.
- Result display was greatly improved. Run numbers should always be in order, grids should not be cut off, and unit text was added to the Offsets grids.
- Fixed a crash when left and right comparison profiles were selected, but only one basis profile (left or right) was selected.
- The Statistics table did not always match the results in the Repeatability table due to Repeatability being rounded to integers before display, and the Statistics calculated before rounding.
Analysis – Smoothness Assurance
- Changing the Comparison filter did not reset the analysis.
- Changes in the Editor that affect the analysis results will force the SAM view to Inputs. Previously, the view was “stuck” in one of the analysis views.
- The Fixed Results table did not always show the Grinded column.
- The Navigation button would disappear when the window was too small or when using Large Fonts.
- Area charts for Continuous results have been reverted back to line charts. The area charts do not do a good job showing peaks when there is a large number of points.
